OK, this is a bit of an exaggeration, but I recently built a custom 4' x 6' shed for a lovely couple to hold a lawnmower, a snow blower, a chainsaw, and two cans of gasoline. Ultimately, what a shed did for this couple was give them enough open floor space in their garage so they could now move more freely without knocking into things or while taking the trash and recycling bins out to the street. This couple was thoroughly dissatisfied with their garage design in that they could only fit one car into a two-car garage because the center post between the garage doors forced them to park along the edges of the garage leaving very little room for trash cans, lawn equipment, and other storage. Though their garage was not overfilled with items, one of them still playfully suggested buying a new home with a bigger garage!
Why So Small?
There are two reasons why I was asked to build a shed this size: 1) the couple's homeowner's association requires that sheds only be placed against the back of the house and their home has windows all along the back, so the height was immediately restricted to 4' and 2) the homeowners wanted it to fit between an area that was less than 42 square feet, against a stairwell, and two large bushes!
As you can see here, there isn't much room to build a large enclosure, but it was large enough to ensure we could fit at least their lawnmower and snow blower.
Why Custom Built?
There are several reasons to consider building a custom shed. The best reason is that you can design it anyway you want based on your exact needs. The site and homeowner association requirements were limiting factors and just going to a big box store and buying a packaged shed would not have worked. The other reason is that when you build a custom shed, you can use quality materials. This shed was built to last! The walls and doors are not made with plywood, but fiber cement panels. The trim isn't cheap yellow pine, but "high-performance" PVC trim board. This material will not not rot or crack. It is highly resistant to mold and mildew and is impervious to moisture, insects and termites. It doesn't even require painting, but can be painted with basic acrylic paints. The extra cost in materials, though not that much more is worth every penny in the money you'll save in future maintenance costs.
