You may have heard the term VOC and that low VOC products are more desirable than high VOC; but what is a VOC? Well, technically VOC is an acronym which means Volatile Organic Compounds. VOC's include a very large group of chemicals that are found in many of the things we use to build and maintain our homes, including carpet, vinyl flooring, and paints.
Why are VOC's Dangerous and Who Should Care?
In our homes, VOC's release or “off-gas” into the indoor air we breathe which can cause many health related issues. For most homeowners, these issues include minor eye, nose, and throat irritation. However VOC's also can cause cancer and even death if inhaled over long periods of time and at high concentrations; the latter usually involves those that manufacture or use these chemicals over the long term. Though people with respiratory problems, children, and our senior citizens may be more susceptible to VOC irritation and illness, we should all be concerned about bringing VOC's into our home. Many home product manufacturers know this and most have been working to create low-VOC products.
Low-VOC Paints
When called to paint for a customer, a common question I get asked is if the paint I use is low-VOC. What I usually find after a question or two is that what these customers are really interested in is if the paint I use is "low-smell." And just because a paint may have low-smell, doesn't mean it is low-VOC. I can tell you that I almost exclusively use Sherwin-Williams paints and the types of interior, acrylic-based paints I use are all low-VOC (and mostly low-smell).
If you're looking for a paint that is both low-VOC and low-smell, call or text Simply Home Maintenance today at (240) 324-8081 to discuss your options.
