I have found that one of the most frequently thought about homeowner tasks, but least primary requested jobs is to change out light fixtures - whether it is the front porch light or the dining room light, it doesn't matter. However, when I'm onsite doing other work, one of the most frequently expressed desires is to do such a task. So then, what is the hold up on seeking my help to install new light fixtures? There are several reasons I hear why homeowners ponder this change, but, hesitate to take action.
"New lighting must be very expensive, right?" So the answer to this question is yes and no. Light fixtures are like anything else, you can find high-end lighting that cost as much or even more than a new SUV! And you can find very cheap lighting online or at one of the big box stores. But there are a lot of lighting choices in between. One of the more in-between, but very appealing lighting choices can be found in furniture stores like Arhaus. You'll find all manner of light fixtures for every room here from $2,000+ on down to $59. But I bet they have one style of light that works for your budget.
"If I change one light fixture, say in the dining room, then I have to change them all, and that's just too much right now to figure out." That would be a lot to figure out, but that thinking is just not true. Just because the home builder installed recessed lighting in every room doesn't mean that when you hang a new dining room light, you need to hang the same style of lights in your kitchen or even make a change to your kitchen lighting. Of course, you can switch up all your lighting at one time, but you don't have to and that's just fine. The point is that it can become a hindrance to making any changes if we think this way. However, I'll point out that once a homeowner asks me to change one light fixture, that frequently is all it takes to motivate and embolden that homeowner to keep going. And then they say, "I wish I had done this a long time ago!"
